Renovated Smith and Rio Vista Parks Quickly Taking Shape

Construction work continues on the grounds of Smith Park and Rio Vista Park as both parks are in the middle of a combined $14 million upgrade. The work is being done as part of the Parks Master Plan to renovate City park facilities.

Even with access to Smith Park blocked by temporary fencing, new light poles and fence posts can be seen by passers-by traveling along Rosemead Boulevard. Behind the fence, crews are busy installing a new drainage system for the synthetic turf soccer/football field. Bleachers are also taking shape throughout the park, including around the new baseball fields that have been laid out with sunken dugouts. New utility lines are also being installed throughout the park, including at a new concession building.

In addition to the new sports fields and concession stand, the $9 million renovation of Smith Park includes construction of a restroom and storage building, accessible playground and picnic facilities, and an expanded parking lot.

At nearby Rio Vista Park, the softball fields have been laid out and fine graded, the backstops are going in and sports light poles have been erected. Roof framing work continues on the concession and maintenance buildings. Once completed, the $5 million worth of renovations at Rio Vista Park will include a new state-of-the-art softball complex with five fields, a new concession, restroom and storage building, accessible playground and picnic facilities.

As with any major construction projects, the work areas present a variety of safety hazards for non-construction personnel. Trespassing is prohibited and members of the public are asked not to enter the construction areas of Smith Park and Rio Vista Park.

Construction is expected to continue through this spring. For more information about the renovation projects, call the Parks and Recreation office at 562.801.4430.
