The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Los Angeles County public safety and public works agencies will headline an informational meeting hosted by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) and Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (CA-38) on Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Norwalk City Hall, 12700 Norwalk Blvd., CA 90650, regarding emergency preparedness for El Niño-related severe weather events. See agenda below.
“As a result of El Niño, weather experts are warning that Southern California may experience very powerful rain storms which may bring flooding and landslides. This informational meeting will help the public learn what steps they can take to protect themselves and their families,” said Senator Tony Mendoza.
The recent flash flooding and mudslides from heavy rains demonstrated how vulnerable Southern California is to extreme weather events. Experts are warning that this year could be a very active and unpredictable flood season statewide due to expected strong El Niño conditions.
An El Niño is a climatic event occurring every two to seven years, characterized by warming of surface waters and reduced upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water off the western coast of South America, causing die-offs of plankton and fish and influencing jet stream winds, altering storm tracks and affecting the climate throughout much of the world.
