When filling out the application who is the Head of Household?

Head of Household is the person applying for Section 8.

I’m already on the waiting list, how long do I have to wait?

We are unable to estimate when applicants will be pulled from the waiting list.  The length of time varies and may take years before your application reaches the top of the waiting list.

How can I check the status of my Section 8 application?

Applications are processed in the order that they are received, preference given to applicants who live or work in the city of Pico Rivera and veterans that live or work in the city. 

The waiting list is updated each year.  You will receive a questionnaire inquiring whether you wish to remain on the waiting list.  Please respond to this questionnaire immediately.  If the questionnaire is not returned by the required date, your name will be removed from the Section 8 waiting list.

Please note that staff is unable to determine where you are on the waiting list.  There is no method of determining the length of time you will be on the waiting list as this varies and may take several years before your application reaches the top of the waiting list. 

When your application reaches the top of the waiting list you will be mailed an appointment letter to determine eligibility.  At least one family member on the application must be a U.S. citizen or eligible immigrant.  A criminal history check will be conducted for all adults 18 years or older listed on the application.

While on the waiting list, it is your responsibility to notify the Housing Division in writing if you move and have a change of address.  You must provide proof of your new address when submitting your written notice.

I already have a Section 8 voucher but would like to move to Pico Rivera, what do I need to do?

We do accept transfers from participants who already have a tenant based voucher.  You will need to contact your current Section 8 specialist and request to "port" or transfer. Your specialist will process the paperwork and forward it to our attention.  Once your paperwork is received, we will contact you.  We will interview you to determine eligibility in our jurisdiction.  All adults must be present for the interview and will need to bring all current income, ID's, social security cards, bank statements, etc. We will also run a criminal history check on all adult family members. The City of Pico Rivera Housing Agency only covers the City of Pico Rivera, California, so you must lease a in Pico Rivera if you transfer to us.

When you transfer to our jurisdiction, you will be subject to our subsidy standards (the number of bedrooms you receive on the voucher).  Our subsidy standards are as follows:

  • 0 bedroom - 1-2 persons
  • 1 bedroom - 1-4 persons
  • 2 bedroom - 3-6 persons
  • 3 bedroom - 5-8 persons
  • 4 bedroom - 7-10 persons

Any additional family members would have to be added to your case prior to your file being transferred to us.

Effective October 1, 2019, the payment standards are as follows:

  • 0 bedroom - $1,406
  • 1 bedroom - $1,668
  • 2 bedroom - $2,151
  • 3 bedroom - $2,875
  • 4 bedroom - $3,142
