Senior Center Volunteers Recognized

A total of 60 volunteers were honored recently at the Pico Rivera Senior Center’s annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. This event is an opportunity for the City and Senior Center staff to show the volunteers how much their work and volunteer time is appreciated. Each of the volunteers at this year’s “Our Volunteers Rock Around the Clock” event received a certificate and small gift in recognition of their ongoing support, contributions and commitment to the Center.

This dedicated team of individuals assists with a variety of programs, from the daily nutrition and homebound meals program to special events, instructing fitness classes and tax return assistance. Several of this year’s honorees volunteered more than 750 hours of their time this past year, while all the Senior Volunteers donated approximately 10,276 hours at the Center.

Among the 60 volunteers, James Chaves was named Pico Rivera Senior Center’s Volunteer of the Year for 2017 with over 898 volunteer hours. James has devoted his time to the Senior Center for the past two years as a volunteer. James’ dedication is evident as he can be seen at the Center every day assisting with the nutrition program. James has taken the lead role in assisting patrons in completing the required documents to participate in the program. According to Senior Center staff, James is one of the most dedicated and hardworking volunteers at the Center.

Josie Lugo was also recognized at the luncheon as the Older American of the Year. Josie, a member of Shade Lane Senior Club for the past 7 years, was nominated by fellow club members for her years of dedication to not only the Shade Lane Senior Club, but the community as well. She will be presented with a special award by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors at its Older Americans Recognition Event to be held later this month.

The City of Pico Rivera is thankful to James Chaves, Josie Lugo, and all the Volunteers at the Pico Rivera Senior Center who volunteer countless hours to assist in programs that benefit their peers.
