Protect Your House While on Vacation
Summer travel reminder: Tips to keep your home safe while you are away.
» Don’t broadcast your plans – Avoid posting travel updates on social media until you’re back from vacation. Thieves watch for signs of an empty house.
» Use timers for lights – A few well placed timers on lamps or TVs can create the illusion that someone’s home.
» Pause mail and packages – A pile of mail or packages signals nobody’s home. Have a neighbor collect them or put a hold on deliveries.
» Lock everything – This sounds obvious, but double-check doors, windows, the garage, and gates. Don’t forget the upstairs windows and/or basements.
» Set your alarm system – If you have a security system, make sure it’s armed. Let the company know you’ll be gone, so they can respond faster if an alert happens.
» Ask a trusted neighbor to check in – Even small things, like moving a trash bin or parking in your driveway can make a home look occupied.
» Secure Valuables – Keep jewelry, important documents, and other valuables in a safe or security deposit box.
» Unplug non-essential electronics – Protect your home from electrical fires or power surges while saving energy.
» Keep your lawn maintained – If you’ll be gone a while, hire someone to mow the lawn so it doesn’t look abandoned.
» Review your insurance – Make sure your homeowners or renters’ insurance is current and covers theft or damage while you’re away.
