The Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station has provided some safety tips to ensure everyone has a safe summer.
Stay Hydrated –
» Drink water often, even if you are not thirsty.
» Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate. Heat Protection –
» Wear lightweight, light colored clothing.
» Take breaks in the shade or indoors.
» Know signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke (Dizziness, nausea, headache, confusion, and rapid heartbeat.
Sun Safety –
» Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) every 2 hours.
» Wear sunglasses with UV protection and a wide-brimmed hat.
» Avoid direct sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.
Water Safety/Pool Safety –
» Always supervise children, no exceptions
» Install fencing, self-latching gates, and pool alarms
» Keep lifesaving equipment nearby (hook and ring buoy)
Road & Traffic Awareness –
» Teach kids to watch for cars – even in driveways and parking lots.
» Wear reflective clothing and gear when riding a bicycle or walking near roads.
Pet Safety –
» Never leave pets in a parked car, even with the windows cracked.
» Provide shade and fresh water.
» Walk dogs early in the morning or evening to avoid hot pavement.
Child Safety –
» Check playground equipment – hot metal can burn skin.
» Monitor for dehydration and reapply sunscreen.
» Teach kids how to dial emergency services.
» Have a family plan for public outings and check-in times.
